Being an artist, is a way of life, and I am grateful that I have managed to remain an artist thru my many years of marriage, motherhood, and a career in the health field. Art has carried me through when the journey through this life has gotten a bit rough. I have found solace in the doing and inner peace in the creation of it.
I have had the opportunity to work alongside a fine artist and teacher Pat Lutz, who has been my mentor for over 35 years. I work with a group of 30 women, three times a week, most of whom have been together at least 20 years. This coupled with time in my home studio, taking workshops and art retreats, has allowed me to explore many mediums. I have given each of those at least two years of intensive study before moving on to another. Mediums I enjoy include watercolor, pen & ink, acrylic, mixed media and sculpting in clay. I enjoy utilizing each medium realistically and then stretching it into more of a non representational genre. An avid sketcher, many journals are piled up in my studio filled with pen & ink drawings and quick watercolor studies providing me with memories of my travels and everyday life. As of late I have begun a return to plein air painting in oils. I just love a reason to be out in nature and looking forward to some weekends in Maine this spring and summer.
I graduated from New England School of Art & Design when it was a small art school on Huntington Ave., Boston. I spent ten years in the graphic design field before I took time off to raise our two sons. I did not return full time to my art until I retired nine years ago. All through that period of time I continued with night classes at the studio, and attended workshops when I was able. I have taught numerous adult classes and have taken students on weekend workshops along the Maine coast.
Creating art has sustained me throughout my life, providing me with solace and peace in troubling times. Being a caregiver for my mom during her last two years of life, while still coming to grips with the unexpected loss of my brother, has had a profound effect on the way in which I live my life. I now create with intention, connecting to a deeper place in my consciousness. Over the past two years my main concentration is the creation of a new body of work consisting of portraits and sculptures.
Art has always been a part of my life, and a source of inner joy. Immersing myself into the process of learning a variety of mediums has given me the opportunity to discover many ways of artistic expression.
Inspiration through most of my years as an artist has come from the beauty of the New England coastline and its quaint communities.
Since the pandemic, I look to create art that evokes a personal and spiritual message that awakens the soul with the reminder of our shared humanity.
